I have experienced the SMBI community spirit at its best during the 2011 Brisbane floods which cut off our mainland transport for several days because of debris floating down from the Brisbane and Logan rivers, in 2012 we had a “brief Storm” (20 minute storm) with 150km wind gusts that took out our power for 7 days and the bush fires our Islands have endured and survived. We as islands have also had to live through several days without water when a water main burst on Karragarra Island. At times this is part island living.
As islanders we have always pulled together, helped each other and been there for each other. I have no doubt that our Island “Spirt” will prevail again, with islanders helping islanders. Our Local council have always helped, our State and Federal MP’s have always helped and they will continue to do so, our local island community leaders will also be present and available, as well as those we do not know. Don’t be surprised when an islander knocks on your door to say hello, or to offer assistance.
