This success story started as an accident.In 1880, two brothers Michael (aged 41) and Anthony Wakim (aged 33) decided to leave their village in Mount Lebanon. They boarded a ship to start a new life with their uncle Tanous Wakim in Argentina. But at the changeover in Port Said (Egypt), they boarded the wrong ship that was destined for Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) instead of Buenos Aires (Argentina)!This confusion was not uncommon for early immigrants who had rarely ventured outside their village.On Australian shores, the White Australia Policy forced them to start their new life away from the capital cities.They settled in Mudgee, 261 kms north-west of Sydney. Like many early immigrants in regional Australia, the Wakim brothers started their new life as horseback hawkers selling homewares and drapery. They bought and sold businesses, then bought and sold properties making them heavily involved in the real estate market. After 14 years, these two ‘Natives of Mount Lebanon’ took their Oath of Allegiance and were issued with their Certificate of Naturalisation.They gained the trust of the locals and established a chain of properties in NSW that dates back to 1889. So close was their bond that these Wakim brothers both died in 1938. Many generations of Wakim descendants and relatives have followed these pioneering ancestors and made Australia their home since 1880. The Wakim family has a strong history of real estate, property development, finance, law and accountancy.Over 140 years later, we continue to be the beneficiaries of their original accident. 2023 is auspicious as it marks exactly 100 years since their Mudgee address became a continuous real estate hub.This is where the journey of our Wakim Realty team intersects with the Wakim ancestors.Since 2011, Wakim Realty has honoured the legacy of our ancestors.
